Take a seat and have chat with Chatty Cafe

A new weekly community initiative aimed at fostering connection and reducing isolation for Cairns locals will begin next week.

In partnership with Mission Australia, Mount Sheridan Plaza are launching Chatty Café inside the Food Court starting Tuesday at 10:30am from September 20, 2022.

It is hoped Chatty Café will help connect communities and increase social interactions by getting people chatting. The initiative encourages venues to adopt the program to offer people the opportunity to socialise.

In the wake of the pandemic, there has been a greater focus on social isolation, loneliness, and mental health. The ’Chatty Café’ will bring people of all ages from all walks of life together in a comfortable and safe environment.

Mission Australia Community Chaplain Cairns South Mandy Butcher said with one in four people experiencing a sense of loneliness and social disconnection each week, combating social isolation was more important than ever.

“We are proud to bring this concept to life on the south side of Cairns and to encourage Cairns locals to have a chat and reconnect,” she said. “Chatty Café is free, but you are welcome to purchase food or drinks in the centre.”

Centre Marketing Manager Angela Liversage said there was no need to book, and everyone was welcome.

“Just come along, have a chat, and discover the community resources at your disposal,” she said. “We all love a cuppa and conversation and Chatty Cafe will turn that into a community lifeline. Come find the ’Have a Chat’ table every week at the Mount Sheridan Plaza Food Court from 10:30am next Tuesday.”

Chatty volunteers – expert icebreakers, listeners, and of course, chatters, will be facilitating each event, to encourage everyone to get involved and meet new people.

Find the “Have a Chat” table every week at the Mount Sheridan Plaza Food Court from 10:30am next Tuesday.”

Volunteer with Chatty Café Australia and get back a whole lot more than you give. Meet new people and help strengthen social connections without the community.
